5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Skin in the Winter

Asheville’s winter weather can be brutal on your skin, often leaving it feeling dry, irritated, and dull. Cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating all strip moisture from your skin, so adjusting your skincare products and routine for the season is a must to avoid these winter skin woes. Below, our skincare experts at Mountain Radiance share their best tips to keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing all winter long.

1. Keep your skin hydrated

The problem: The lack of moisture in winter air can cause dry, red, and flaky skin.

The solution: Switch to a thicker moisturizer with rich, hydrating ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, and squalane to help lock in moisture and strengthen your skin barrier. If your skin still feels tight, layer a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or niacinamide under your moisturizer to deeply hydrate and soothe the skin.

You’ll also need a nourishing eye cream with peptides and caffeine to keep the delicate under-eye area hydrated and refreshed. And don’t forget that your lips are skin too! Have a hydrating lip treatment with shea butter or lanolin on hand at all times to prevent chapping.

2. Avoid over-exfoliating

The problem: Harsh scrubs and exfoliating acids can weaken your skin’s natural barrier and cause irritation and sensitivity.

The solution: Scale back on exfoliation during the winter months and use a gentle chemical exfoliant (like lactic acid) once or twice a week at most to remove dead skin without stripping essential moisture. If your skin is feeling extra sensitive, we recommend giving your skin a break from exfoliation and sticking to hydrating masks and treatments instead.

Our Hydrafacial MD treatments are ideal for very gentle exfoliation and nourishing your skin with hydrating serums, so you can keep your complexion smooth without sacrificing the moisture that’s in short supply this time of year!

Dry, winter air requires a more intensive skincare routine to maintain your skin health—your winter regimen should focus on deep hydration, barrier repair, and protection.

3. Use a gentle cleanser

The problem: Many foaming or gel cleansers can be too harsh in the winter, further drying out your skin, and leaving it stripped and irritated.

The solution: Switch to a hydrating cream or oil-based cleanser that will gently clean your skin without removing its natural oils. Products with ingredients like glycerin or aloe vera help soothe and replenish moisture while cleansing.

4. Don’t skip sunscreen

The problem: Sunscreen isn’t exclusive to the warmer months! Winter UV exposure can still cause skin damage.

The solution: Continue applying SPF 30+ every single day – rain or shine. Snow and ice reflect UV rays and increase your risk of sun damage, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation. If your skin is particularly dry, try a moisturizer with SPF or layer a lightweight sunscreen over your daily moisturizer.

“My experience at Mountain Radiance was wonderful! It’s been 10+ years since I’ve had a facial. The Hydrafacial I had was the best EVER! It was so gentle and relaxing. Breanne was amazing! She explained the procedure and all my options. She was so friendly. I will definitely return to Mountain Radiance and Breanne for more services.”

5. Invest in professional skincare treatments

The problem: Home skincare can only do so much—sometimes, your skin needs a professional assessment and treatments to restore your skin health and glow!

The solution: In addition to the Hydrafacials we mentioned above, we also love Skinvive, dermaplaning, or a customized facial to deeply hydrate, exfoliate, and stimulate collagen production to combat dullness and keep your skin looking and feeling great. Our expert skincare specialists customize each treatment to your skin’s specific needs to ensure you get the best results throughout the season.
