Patients often ask us: “Should I get Restylane or Juvéderm filler?” The short answer is—it depends on your goals! These popular dermal fillers are both safe and effective, but each offers unique benefits based on where and how they’re used.
Below, the expert injectors at our Asheville medspa break it all down so you can feel confident and informed when choosing a filler.
What are Restylane and Juvéderm?
Restylane and Juvéderm are FDA-approved injectable fillers made from hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a substance that naturally occurs in your skin and helps retain hydration and volume. We use these fillers to restore volume loss, soften lines, and enhance facial contours—with instant results and without downtime—and use them in areas like the lips, cheeks, chin, under-eyes, and smile lines.

How are they different?
The biggest difference lies in the technology behind their unique formulations.
Restylane offers fillers that use NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) Technology, which cross-links individual strands of hyaluronic acid to make a studier gel. This type of filler provides structure, lift, and definition, and stays in place well because of its thick consistency. Fillers formulated with NASHA technology include: Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Eyelight.
Restylane also offers fillers with XpresHAn Technology™ (Optimal Balance Technology or OBT), which uses a more loosely cross-linked structure, giving the filler more flexibility to move naturally with your unique facial expressions. Fillers formulated with XpresHAn technology include: Restylane Contour, Restylane Kysse, Restylane Defyne, and Restylane Refyne.
“My experience with Sarah was great! I was nervous about getting filler in my lips because I didn’t want them to be big. She assured me that they would not be. They look perfect with no more lines. She made me feel very comfortable and went over everything with me completely. Definitely will be going back to get more things done with Sarah!”

Juvéderm fillers are formulated using Hylacross® and Vycross® technologies. Hylacross technology is a cross-linking process that creates a smooth, cohesive gel using high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. This provides excellent structure, durability, and a natural feel for volumizing and wrinkle correction. Fillers formulated with Hylacross technology include: Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC.
Juvéderm’s newer Vycross technology blends two different sizes of hyaluronic acid particles to create a filler that lasts longer and feels even smoother. By using more of the smaller HA particles, fillers with Vycross technology are slower to naturally dissolve. Fillers formulated with Vycross technology include: Juvéderm Voluma XC, Juvéderm Vollure XC, and Juvéderm Volbella XC.

Our goal is always the same: natural-looking results that align with your vision and lifestyle. We often use both brands in different areas during the same appointment!

“I absolutely love this place, especially my injector Christina. She listens to you, never pushes anything extra on you, and does an AMAZING job. She’s done my entire face at this point (filler and Botox) but I think my favorite is the lips she gave me. Highly recommend Mountain Radiance and Christina!”

How long do results last?
Your results with Restylane and Juvéderm will vary based on the product used, treatment area, and your metabolism (your body naturally breaks down the filler over time).
- Juvéderm results can last 12 to 24 months, depending on the formula.
- Restylane results typically last 6 to 18 months, again depending on the specific filler.
Our injectors can help you maintain your look with either brand and we’ll recommend the right time frame to book your touch-up injections based on the filler formula we used.
What is filler treatment like?
You’ll start with a personalized consultation with one of our highly experienced injectors: Dr. Mark Chandler, physician assistant Christina, or nurse injector Sarah. Your injector will spend time getting to know you and your unique anatomy, and discuss your goals or any concerns. They will also discuss which filler brand and formula they recommend based on your conversation and answer any questions you may have.
Once you feel completely comfortable and confident about your treatment plan, your injector will place each injection with meticulous care and precision to achieve the look you desire. The injections themselves take just a few minutes and all formulas include lidocaine (a numbing agent) to make the quick injections more comfortable.

“What a wonderful practice…Dr. Mark is a true artist. So pleased with the results of the Botox & Fillers, I could see an immediate result. Dr. Mark takes his time, truly studies your face for the best use of the product, I feel fabulous. Thank you Dr. Mark, you & your staff are top notch.”
