What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that are injected beneath the skin to enhance facial structures and smooth wrinkles and folds. Fillers are nearly painless to inject; we use a needle or an atraumatic cannula technique for minimal harm to surrounding tissues.

These anti-aging injectable treatments are used and work differently than Botox or Dysport: dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin, where they add plumpness or smooth wrinkles, while Botox-type injectables are injected into muscles to temporarily relax expression-based wrinkles.
We offer Juvéderm fillers and Restylane fillers—both of which are FDA-approved—at our Asheville medical spa.
What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a colorless, smooth gel that is naturally present in the human body. HA has many uses: it has been used for injections into arthritic joints in humans and animals for many years (some brand names are Synvisc and Hyalgan). HA can be formulated with different consistencies and properties, and the Allergan company (that also makes Botox) creates different HA filler consistencies for different areas of the face and body.
We also offer several other Juvéderm formulas, each slightly different in consistency and use.

Juvéderm Fillers Offered at Mountain Radiance
Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC
Juvéderm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC offer subtle but significant improvement to creases and folds in lower face areas like the nasolabial folds and around the mouth.
What are the benefits of Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC filler?
Juvederm Ultra XC was the first filler created by Allergan. It is a bit thinner than Ultra Plus XC and is still used in the lips, giving them a more soft, sensuous texture than Ultra Plus XC. Juvederm Ultra XC is said to last about 9 months, although this varies from person to person.
Juvederm Ultra Plus XC has the two following advantages over the original Ultra XC formula: it is said to last longer, as long as 12 months. It is also slightly firmer than Ultra XC.
The “XC” listed in the name of any of these fillers means that it is mixed with a small amount of lidocaine to make the injection virtually painless.
Juvéderm Voluma XC
Juvéderm Voluma is our choice filler for a “non-surgical facelift.” We use this formula to add volume and “lift” to the cheeks and other areas where significant volume is desired.
What are the benefits of Juvéderm Voluma XC filler?
Juvederm Voluma XC (usually referred to simply as “Voluma”) is a newer product for which Allergan uses the “Vycross” technology for crosslinking the molecules of the filler. This technology gives the material a “spongier,” more natural feel and is less likely to adsorb water from the surrounding tissues. This means that the filler, once placed, will not continue to increase in size. Voluma is typically used to volumize the cheeks, lifting the lower parts of the face subtly.
We may also use Voluma to enhance the tear troughs, or sunken areas below the eyes. A deep tear trough under the eye is an early sign of aging that shadows circles under the eyes. Clients with deep troughs often complain that they look older than they really are, or appear tired when they feel fine. Correcting tear troughs with Voluma or Juvederm Ultra Plus gives superlative results and lasts about a year.
Juvéderm Volbella XC
Juvéderm Volbella XC is the ideal filler to create soft, full lips. This formula can also be used to address vertical lines that form above the upper lip.
What are the benefits of Juvéderm Volbella XC filler?
Juvederm Volbella XC, or simply “Volbella” is the ultimate lip enhancement treatment. It is requested by young women who would like fuller, more sensuous lips, as well as older women who would like reversal of age-related changes. For all clients, we are very careful to use this product with moderation in order to achieve natural-looking results, as many clients are afraid of appearing “overdone” with lip filler.
Volbella, like Voluma, uses Vycross technology to create a filler that is ideal for enhancing the dynamic lip area. Volbella can offers an amazing improvement in age-related volume loss of the lips; additionally, it can reduce or eliminate the vertical “cigarette lines” that can form above or below the lips. These lines (perioral rhytids) are caused primarily by the aging process, but may worsen due to sun damage.
Juvéderm Vollure XC
Juvedérm Vollure XC can be used in many locations including the cheeks, deeper folds of the face and in the lips to provide more shape and volume while retaining a natural softness.
What are the benefits of Juvéderm Vollure XC filler?
Juvederm Vollure XC, often just “Vollure”, helps both men and women diminish visible signs of aging. This formula is ideal for smoothing marionette lines and nasolabial folds for a natural, rejuvenated look while avoiding the “overfilled” appearance.
Vollure uses Vycross technology, similar to Voluma and Volbella, to create a filler perfect for treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles. Its unique balance of softness and durability adapts beautifully to facial expressions.
A key advantage of Vollure is its long-lasting effect. It’s been shown to maintain improvements for 18 months—outperforming many other fillers. Vollure significantly improves deep facial lines, enhancing facial symmetry and texture. Patients enjoy a softer, relaxed look, without fear of appearing overdone.
Juvéderm Volux XC
Juvedérm Volux XC is specifically formulated to define and enhance your jawline. The thicker consistency provides structure for a lifted, chiseled appearance to your jawline and neck contours.
What are the benefits of Juvéderm Volux XC filler?
Juvederm Volux XC, commonly known as “Volux”, dramatically improves facial definition, enhancing the jawline and chin area for an attractively sculpted appearance.
Like its counterparts, Volux utilizes Vycross technology that seamlessly integrates with your facial structures for natural-looking results. It offers a superb balance between volume and flexibility, making it ideal to achieve a structured enhancement to the jawline.
Volux’s effects have been shown to last up to 12 months or longer, making it a long-term solution for clients seeking beautifully defined facial contours.

What is Restylane?
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler designed to restore volume and smooth out wrinkles. Like Juvéderm filler, it is composed of HA to help maintain hydration and elasticity in the skin. Restylane is particularly effective for adding volume to the lips, softening nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth), and enhancing cheek contours. It also offers specialized filler formulations for delicate areas such as under-eye hollows and fine lines.

Restylane vs. Juvéderm
Restylane and Juvéderm fillers are both high-quality hyaluronic acid-based fillers and each offer a range of formulas designed for different areas of the face. Both brands provide excellent results, with options tailored for smoothing wrinkles, enhancing lips, restoring volume, and contouring the face.
Juvéderm filler is known for its smooth consistency and incorporates Vycross technology in some formulas, which helps create long-lasting, natural-looking results. Restylane, on the other hand, utilizes XpresHAn Technology™ in certain fillers, allowing for dynamic movement and flexibility.
Our team at Mountain Radiance selects the best filler based on each patient’s unique needs, facial anatomy, and desired outcome, and we will work with you to determine the ideal choice for your goals.

Filler vs. Botox
Botox is a medication that takes approximately two weeks to fully take effect by relaxing the muscles that cause active wrinkles. It is most commonly used from the eyes up, or in the upper face.
Dermal filler is a gel that is not a medication but a volumizer injected beneath the skin to fill, smooth, and/or volumize areas. Filler is typically used on the lower part of the face, from the eyes down.
The results of dermal filler are instantly visible following injection; very little change will occur over the days following the injections. This is different from Botox, which requires about two weeks of patience to see results.
Treatment with filler and Botox can be performed on the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do dermal fillers work?
Juvéderm and Restylane fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a smooth, colorless gel. This gel increases the volume of tissues beneath wrinkles and folds of skin, lifting and smoothing them.
How should I care for my lips after my treatment?
After your lip filler treatment, there are a few things you need to do to avoid disrupting your body’s healing process or worsening swelling or bruising. Check out our blog post on lip filler aftercare for our recommendations on caring for your lips after filler treatment!
How long do dermal fillers take to work?
All of the fillers provide nearly instant results. There will be only minor changes as swelling and bruising subside in the days following treatment.
How long do Juvéderm fillers last?
AllAllergan, the manufacturer of Juvéderm fillers, makes the following statements about the longevity of each formula:
- Juvéderm Ultra lasts up to 9 months
- Juvéderm Ultra Plus lasts up to 18 months
- Voluma lasts up to 2 years
- Volbella lasts up to 1 year
- Vollure lasts up to 18 months
- Volux lasts 1 year
In our observation, the duration of time before fillers dissolve are variable. Some clients we have treated with Juvéderm are still happy at 1 year. Others treated with Voluma require further enhancement in about 1 year or even less. The variability likely has to do with the individual patient, as some individuals may simply require more frequent enhancements.
How long do Restylane fillers last?
GaldeGalderma, the manufacturer of Restylane fillers, provides the following estimates for how long each formula lasts:
- Restylane & Restylane-L lasts between 6 to 12 months
- Restylane Contour lasts 1 year
- Restylane Kysse lasts 1 year
- Restylane Lyft lasts 12+ months
- Restylane Refyne lasts 1 year
- Restylane Eyelight lasts 1 year
Some patients maintain their results beyond the estimated timeframe, while others may require touch-ups sooner; factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and treatment area can all influence how long the filler lasts. Regular touch-up injections can help you maintain your results.
How do I prepare for a filler treatment?
Prepare for your filler treatment by avoiding aspirin and all anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, and Naprosyn to prevent increased bruising. Tylenol, on the other hand, is okay.
How do I choose an injector for my filler?
When choosing a provider to treat you with filler, you always want an experienced and knowledgeable practitioner who is attentive to your needs and desires, and who has provided many other happy clients with natural-looking results. The key element to superb dermal filler results is a natural-looking result that does not appear “over-done.”
If an unqualified provider has given you unsatisfactory results, our expert team at Mountain Radiance can treat over-filled areas (where hyaluronic acid-based filler was used) with hyaluronidase—a corrective enzyme that dissolves the filler and reverses some of the effects of the treatment.
Is filler safe?
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers in general are extraordinarily safe. Adverse effects, such as allergic reactions, are possible but extremely rare. Since HA is normally present in the human body, adding more should not cause a reaction or problem. Still, complications can occur with any medical treatment.
Filler side effects
Temporary side effects after dermal filler treatment can include pain at the injection site, bruising, and swelling. Our talented team’s injection technique results in less bruising, but there still may be some bruising or swelling after injection. Bruising sometimes develops overnight. There is also usually some minor swelling at the injection sites, which typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours.
