RF Microneedling

Is your skin in need of a transformation? RF microneedling, an innovative treatment combining radiofrequency (RF) energy and microneedling, could be what you need to see dramatically younger-looking and smoother skin—with minimal downtime.

How it works and what it treats

RF microneedling, or microneedling with radiofrequency, leverages the power of two technologies to not only tighten the skin, but also improve its texture and tone.

The science behind RF microneedling

Microneedling involves a technique known as collagen induction therapy (CIT). Tiny microneedles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating its natural healing process and boosting collagen production. Unlike exfoliation treatments, such as chemical peels, microneedling penetrates beyond the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin).

When combined with RF energy, this process goes a step further. The RF energy delivers heat into the sub-dermis, remodeling the collagen beneath the skin’s surface. This dual-action approach promotes both surface rejuvenation and deep tissue tightening.

Concerns treated by RF microneedling

RF microneedling addresses a variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven pigmentation (sun damage, hyperpigmentation)
  • Aging, crepey skin
  • Rough skin texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks

RF microneedling can also be performed on the body, such as to treat stretch marks in the abdomen or acne scars on the back.

Treatment areas: Face and body

RF microneedling is versatile and can be used on both the face and body to target your concerns. Common areas that we treat at our Asheville medspa include the cheeks, around eyes, jawline, and neck.

RF microneedling can also be used in the body, such as to treat stretch marks in the abdomen or acne scars on the back.

How many treatments will I need?

For optimal results, we recommend 3-6 treatments, depending on your individual goals and skin condition. These treatment sessions should be spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Still, you can expect to see some RF microneedling results after the first session.

What to expect

Benefits of RF microneedling

RF microneedling offers numerous benefits, making it a popular “non-surgical facelift” for those seeking skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime and no incisions. Benefits include:

  • Smoother, firmer skin
  • Slowed effects of aging
  • Improvement in skin texture and tone

Results

Your skin will continue to improve over the course of several weeks post-treatment, as collagen production gradually increases. While you can expect to see noticeable improvements in your  skin’s texture, firmness, and overall appearance after your first treatment, we recommend a series of 3-6 treatments for optimal results. Our skilled providers will adjust the energy levels (ranging from 0.1mm to 4mm) to suit your skin type and desired results.

Good candidates

RF microneedling is suitable for most skin types and tones. Ideal candidates are those looking to address the concerns mentioned above without undergoing invasive procedures, such as a facelift.

Pain, side effects, and downtime

At Mountain Radiance, we use the FDA-cleared PiXel8-RF Radio Microneedling System for safety and efficacy. You may feel some discomfort as we pass the microneedling device over your skin, although we do offer a topical numbing cream beforehand to minimize pain.

Some redness, similar to a mild sunburn, is normal post-treatment. This typically subsides within a few hours to a day. The procedure requires little to no downtime.

Preparing for radiofrequency microneedling

Before your treatment, we recommend avoiding sun exposure and discontinuing any exfoliating skincare products, including retinol, tretinoin, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid. Wear sunscreen daily, ideally one that is medical-grade (we carry trusted products from SkinMedica in our shop).

Add-on: Benev Exosome Regenerative Complex

To amplify the results from your microneedling treatment, we offer Benev’s exosome therapy, a cutting-edge growth factor serum. This add-on enhances all of the benefits of microneedling, including reducing uneven pigmentation and wrinkles, as well as increasing skin’s radiance.

Benev Exosome treatment bottles

Our exosome complex promotes optimal collagen stimulation and results from microneedling.

We utilize a highly-purified, clinically-proven exosome regenerative complex serum. This complex harnesses the power of stem-cell derived exosomes, potent growth factors, peptides, coenzymes, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins. Unlike platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which requires drawing your blood to extract the growth factor-rich platelets, Benev’s exosomes are made in a lab. And, they contain a significantly higher concentration of growth factors compared to other treatments.

How it works

If you opt for the exosome add-on, we will first perform the microneedling treatment, which primes your skin to receive the exosomes’ benefits. We will apply the regenerative complex serum topically following the treatment. To maximize its benefits, you’ll need to avoid washing your face for several hours and shield your skin from UV exposure as it heals.

Frequently asked questions

How long does RF microneedling last?

After you have completed the recommended number of sessions (usually between 3 and 6), you can expect your RF microneedling results to last about 1-2 years.

Is RF microneedling better than microneedling?

Traditional microneedling and the similar treatment we offer, Procell microchanneling, have many of the same effects of RF microneedling, but RF microneedling provides more dramatic benefits in fewer sessions—especially skin tightening.

What are the risks of RF microneedling?

In the hands of an unskilled provider, RF microneedling may carry a risk of scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), in which the skin darkens in response to treatment. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation, we may recommend an alternative treatment such as a chemical peel to achieve similar effects without this risk.

Our team of aestheticians, nurses, and physician assistants is led by physician Dr. Mark Chandler. All providers are specially trained in the use of our specific PiXel8-RF Radio Microneedling System in order to provide fully customized, safe, and effective treatment. We also provide thorough consultations before offering RF microneedling to ensure that patients who may be at risk of side effects are offered alternative treatments, instead.

Is RF microneedling safe for dark skin tones?

Yes, RF microneedling can be safely used on dark skin tones.

Our team of skilled aesthetic providers in Asheville are led by physician Dr. Mark Chandler, and we are committed to providing excellence in care!
