Dermaplaning in Asheville
Does your skin just look like it needs a pick-me-up? Symptoms like a generally dull skin tone, clogged pores and breakouts, and even signs of aging are often due to a lack of cell turnover—the process that occurs over the course of about a month, constantly replacing dead skin to give you a fresh, healthy complexion.
Dermaplaning is a mechanical exfoliating treatment that can transform dull skin into a bright, glowing complexion and set the stage for your skin to receive maximum benefits from products and other treatments. And routine treatments can even ward off signs of aging! Read on to learn all that dermaplaning can do.
How does dermaplaning work?
The dermaplaning procedure is somewhat straightforward, but it requires an expert aesthetician or medical provider: after cleaning and sanitizing your skin, we will use a sterile surgical scalpel to gently scrape away the top layer of dead skin and vellus hair (or “peach fuzz”) with feather-light strokes.
It takes about 30 minutes to reveal fresh skin, and there’s no downtime. You may have a little bit of redness, but this should pass within a few hours. Dermaplaning is a great procedure to prepare your skin for events since you will see an improved complexion almost instantly.
Can I put makeup on after dermaplaning?
Avoid makeup for the rest of the day after treatment, in case of possible irritation, but be sure to wear sunscreen since you’ll be extra sensitive to UV rays. We will guide you to care for your skin after treatment with a non-irritating moisturizer and sunscreen formula.
What are the benefits of a dermaplaning facial?
- Instantly brighter skin & more even skin tone
- Smoother skin texture & flawless makeup application
- No downtime needed
- Safe for most skin types and tones, with no risk of hyperpigmentation
- Enhances the results of complementary facials, i.e. chemical peels
- Allows for better penetration of topical products and skincare
Dermaplaning is safe for most skin types, even while pregnant or breastfeeding
One of the best things about dermaplaning is that it’s both nearly painless and safe for all skin types and tones. If you have melanin-rich skin or are sensitive to certain products, you can likely undergo dermaplaning without unwanted side effects. It’s even safe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding!
If it’s deep exfoliation you’re after, dermaplaning is an ideal treatment that is safe for most skin types.
If you have a history of cold sores, however, dermaplaning could trigger an outbreak, so talk with your provider about a preventive antiviral medication before your treatment. Those with certain skin conditions may also need to avoid dermaplaning.
How often should I get a dermaplane facial?
Any treatment that falls under the category of “exfoliation” (including chemical peels) gives you better and better results with each repeat treatment. To see optimal results from dermaplaning, keep up a regimen of 3-6 treatments every 4-6 weeks, with touch-ups on a regular basis after that. With repeat treatments, some patients even see improvement of more severe skin imperfections, like fine lines and wrinkles or acne scars.
Combination treatments with dermaplaning
Performed before other skin treatments, dermaplaning can enhance their results or work in a complementary fashion to give your skin a more dramatic change. Consider combining dermaplaning with one of these other treatments or procedures:
1. Dermaplaning & chemical peel
Dermaplaning sets the stage for you to see maximum results from your chemical peel treatment. Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation, while a chemical peel is a chemical exfoliation whose results develop over the course of a few days after treatment.
2. Dermaplaning & Procell Microchanneling
Dermaplaning and Procell Microchanneling work together to both exfoliate and boost collagen production, two keys to flawless skin!
3. Dermaplaning & injectables
Skin treatments plus injectable Botox® and fillers are the ultimate pairing for preventing and addressing signs of aging, like fine lines and sun damage, throughout the face and neck. Botox stops wrinkles at the source; fillers provide customized plumping and replacement of lost volume; and skin treatments like dermaplaning help to keep your skin firm and beautiful.
4. Dermaplaning & facials
We love to suggest our patients add on dermaplaning to any of our regular facials or Hydrafacial options. Dermaplaning clears and smooths the skin, which then allows the high-quality ingredients in the facial serums to sink into your skin for maximum absorption. This combo is especially popular in the sunny summer months when the more sun-sensitive treatments like Procell Microchanneling and Chemical Peels aren’t as common. Be sure to ask us about getting a dermaplaning add-on with your facial!
