Filler Reversal

Dermal filler treatments can sometimes lead to unexpected outcomes, and if you’re not happy with your dermal filler results, the expert injectors at Mountain Radiance can dissolve fillers to restore the natural contours of your features or redesign your look!

How does filler reversal work?

Filler reversal works by precisely injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase into treated areas to break down hyaluronic acid particles. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have a gel-like consistency, and when hyaluronidase is injected, it becomes a less-cohesive liquid that is safely and naturally processed and removed by your lymphatic system.

What kinds of fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase injections?

Hyaluronidase can dissolve HA-based fillers, including:

  • Juvéderm
  • Restylane
  • Belotero
  • Revanesse
  • RHA fillers

What kinds of fillers cannot be dissolved?

Non-HA types of fillers, such as silicone fillers, Sculptra (a Poly-L-Lactic acid-based filler), and Radiesse (made of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) gel microspheres), cannot be dissolved by hyaluronidase.

Why consider having your dermal filler dissolved?

Dissolving the filler can treat overfilled features, uneven results, incorrect placement, and lumps beneath the skin. And in the rare event your filler migrates outside of the treatment area, filler reversal can quickly resolve the issue. Our highly experienced injectors can also dissolve fillers to accommodate changes in your aesthetic preferences at our medical spa.

What areas can have fillers dissolved?

We can dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers in any area of the face and body; the most common areas we dissolve fillers are in the:

  • Lips
  • Tear troughs
  • Cheeks
  • Nasolabial folds

Inaccurate placement, migration, or excess volume in these areas can lead to an unnatural appearance; choosing a highly-experienced injector overseen by a medical doctor will help prevent these issues from occurring in the first place and achieve outstanding dermal filler results.

“It was my first time visiting Mountain Radiance, and was very pleased. Dr. Mark first took the time to speak with me about what I was looking for, then explained which products would be best to achieve my desired results. He was extremely patient with me, as I tend to be a bit nervous. His wife Lauren was extremely helpful as well, and assisted in putting me at ease. I would definitely recommend Mountain Radiance. I plan on returning for more beauty treatments in the future. Thank you Dr. Mark and Lauren for making me feel more beautiful”

Your filler reversal treatment consultation

We’ll begin your consultation by discussing your concerns and asking for detailed information to help us provide the best results possible, including:

  • The type of filler (brand and class) in desired treatment areas (i.e., Juvederm Voluma)
  • The exact location and number of syringes or amount (in ml) of filler that were used
  • The dates of your filler injections
  • Your medical history (specifically any allergies)

We will also examine the area you want to have your filler dissolved to determine optimal injection sites for achieving the filler reversal results you desire.

The filler reversal procedure

Your licensed injector will cleanse the treatment area and carefully inject hyaluronidase into the filler site to successfully dissolve fillers to safely achieve your goals. The procedure typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount and area of filler being dissolved.

Most patients can resume their normal daily activities immediately after the procedure, we simply ask you to avoid strenuous exercise for about 48 hours following the treatment to limit excessive swelling in treated areas.

Is getting dermal fillers dissolved painful?

Filler reversal is generally well-tolerated, and we use numbing creams or local anesthesia to minimize discomfort.

Aftercare

We’ll provide personalized aftercare instructions based on the treatment area. General aftercare guidelines include avoiding direct sun exposure for 24-48 hours after filler reversal and wearing a high-quality sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily.

Filler reversal results

Filler reversal results are typically immediate and improve over the next two weeks following your treatment.

Will I need more than one treatment session?

Some cases may require multiple treatments for complete reversal based on the initial filler type and amount. Many people see optimal results after 1 treatment, while some patients need 3 treatments for complete filler removal.

Potential side effects & complications

Side effects of filler reversal may include mild, temporary swelling or bruising. If you have a history of allergic reactions, we can perform a patch test to ensure we can safely dissolve your filler.

“10 out of 10 stars. I highly recommend. The staff are detail oriented and personable. I have had lip fillers 4 times in my life and Mountain Radiance has offered the best results.”

Filler Reversal FAQs

When can I redo my dermal fillers?

You can get new filler injections two weeks after the last filler reversal treatment. This will allow enough time for the hyaluronidase to leave your tissue and ensure accurate filler placement.

Read our blog, How to Prepare for Your Lip Filler Appointment, for more details.

How much will it cost to have my fillers dissolved?

The cost of filler reversal varies based on the complexity of the treatment. We’ll be able to give you an accurate cost estimate during your consultation.

Will the reversal process leave any scars or marks?

No, filler reversal with hyaluronidase should not cause scarring or permanent marks. Any temporary redness or swelling at the injection site usually resolves within a few days.

What if I have an allergic reaction to bee stings? Can I still have the procedure?

Maybe; hyaluronidase is found in bee and wasp venom, so we’ll discuss your experiences and your risk of potential complications to determine if filler reversal is safe for you.

What other options do I have if I do not like my dermal filler results?

When in doubt, wait it out! All HA fillers will dissolve over time without filler reversal treatments. You may ultimately prefer to let your filler dissolve naturally, especially if your dislike is purely aesthetic and not due to migration, lumps, or asymmetry.

The time it takes for fillers to dissolve naturally depends on the type of filler and the treatment area. Each patient and their experience is unique; however, here are general guidelines:

  • Lip fillers: 12-18 months
  • Under eye fillers: 6-18 months
  • Cheek fillers: 12-36 months

If you are unhappy with the results of a previous filler treatment, schedule a consultation with one of our experienced injectors to explore your options, ask questions, and decide if filler reversal is the right course of action for your unique situation.
